Social media is rhetorical

At the beginning of the semester, my wonderful teacher (Dr. Long) kept throwing around this word - "Rhetoric." I had heard it before. I kind of knew what it was all about. But she made it sound so important, and I wasn't sure why.

First of all, what exactly is rhetoric?
Rhetoric is the art of using language effectively; using speech to persuade, influence, or please an audience.

Sounds just like social media, right?
Social media is fundamentally rhetorical. In order to be effective in social media, you have to develop your language. Basically, you're using your influence to persuade people to pay attention to you. You have the power to say whatever you want to get your audience to view you in a particular way. What's even better is you have the power to change that at any given moment. You're trying to prove a point, you're listening, and people aren't responding the way you want? Change it up. Social media is the art of rhetoric, and rhetoric is an art all in itself.
